American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting 2016

San Francisco, USA, 12-16 December 2016

The AGU’s Fall Meeting is the largest Earth and space science meeting in the world, with more than 20,000 attendees in its more recent edition, held in San Francisco, USA, 12-16 December 2016. The IAI CRN 3035 Investigator Prof. Alice Grimm delivered one of the invited talks of the Meeting, at the Union Session U31A: 2015-2016 El Niño: Global Anomalies and Societal Impacts at Regional Scale. Her talk was titled: El Niño impacts on South America:

The occurrence of high-impact weather and climate extreme events in South America is very influenced by El Nino events, and shows some differences between central and east Pacific events. Monthly and seasonal El Niño-related significant precipitation anomalies will be presented, as  well as the impact on the extreme precipitation events, highlighting the most affected regions. Mechanisms of the El Niño influence on the continent will be discussed. Some of these influences are well simulated by models, but not all of them. The recent 2015-2016 El Nino event produced reasonably typical impacts on precipitation in South America. Climate forecasts issued for the continent by some institutions will be compared with the expected impact obtained from previous events, and with the observed anomalies, especially for austral spring and summer. Floods with great societal impact were observed in southeastern South America, as well as droughts in the central and northern parts of the continent, with repercussions on food production and frequency of forest fires. On the other hand, the enhanced precipitation produced by El Niño in southeastern South America mitigated the desperate situation of water shortage in São Paulo.
